The Marshall Cemetery sits on a beautiful, well-established plot of land in a northeast residential area of Marshall, and great care is taken to honor the memory of all those buried here through ongoing maintenance of the cemetery grounds and our plans for future improvements.

We are a not-for-profit non-denominational cemetery, owned and operated by the Marshall Cemetery Association. Our mission and goal is to provide a well-cared-for, welcoming place of rest for our loved ones. We are open to people of all faiths, creeds, and traditions, and an area of the cemetery has been specifically designed to meet the needs of people of the Islamic faith.

The Marshall Cemetery is owned, operated, and maintained by the Marshall Cemetery Association. It is not affiliated with any religious denomination, nor is it supported by the City of Marshall. Association members include all the people who have purchased interment rights within our cemetery. We are open to people of all faiths, creeds, and traditions.
The cemetery is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset all year round. Our information kiosk can help you find your way throughout the cemetery. Note that dog walking is not permitted within the cemetery.
A lot of planning goes into a funeral, and you can relieve some of the stress during the emotional days and weeks after the death of a loved one by selecting a burial plot and monument or marker ahead of time. We’re happy to help you think through your options.
The Marshall Cemetery Association leases space in our building for a crematory owned and operated by Minnesota River Valley Service (an independent group of local mortuaries). The Marshall Cemetery Association is not directly involved in its operation.
Our current options and prices for graves and interment services are listed on our Prices page. We do allow combinations of traditional and cremation interment within a single resting place.
We do not sell or engrave memorials, but the right to place a marker or memorial headstone comes with every grave sale. Note that there is a small fee for memorial location marking. For more information on our marker and memorial policies, see our Prices page.

History

The Marshall Cemetery was originally established in 1871 by the first white settlers in Lake Marshall Township, Lyon County, Minnesota. In 1897, the Lake Marshall Township Board voted to terminate ownership of the cemetery, and on October 29, 1897, the Marshall Cemetery Association was formally incorporated under Minnesota laws to assume the ownership and management of the cemetery. At that time, the 40-acre tract of land that included the cemetery was deeded to the Association by Lake Marshall Township. 

In 1937, the Cemetery Association added another 9 acres along the south side of the cemetery. Those 49 acres comprise the extent of the cemetery as it exists today. When established in 1871, the cemetery was located just northeast of the town of Marshall. In the 150 years since, Marshall has grown and today it is located in a quiet residential area of town. There are many civic leaders and historical figures interred in our cemetery, including veterans of every American conflict since the War of 1812.

The Marshall Cemetery Association is a 501c(13) nonprofit organization and is totally dependent on income from the sale of graves, rental income from the Minnesota River Valley Service crematory, and donations from individuals in and around our community.

Donations given in support of the organization as a whole are fully tax deductible (while the purchase or maintenance of specific gravesites are not tax deductible).
